Facts And Questions
What is Heirot, exactly, and how is it played? Heirot is a forum-based roleplaying game. The game functions through collaborative writing. Players create characters, and then develop plots in which these characters interact. Each player has sole control of their character’s actions and interactions with the other characters. While the world itself is defined for you as far as geography, technology, and politics, the main goal in Heirot is to give players as much creative freedom as possible. The plot of the story can be as planned or as spontaneous as the players wish. Character creation is extremely open-ended. Whether the content is intellectual, dramatic, action-based, or a combination of the three is up to you.
How do I make a character? To make a character, begin by reading the [about Heirot] section and the race and class guidelines in [character creation]. When you have an idea of how the world is laid out and what kind of character you’d like to make, see [Make Your Character] for details on how to create the character’s profile. When your profile is ready, post it as a new thread in the Character Creation portion of the [forum], using the character’s name as the thread title. Once your character is submitted, wait for two administrators to post an approval message in the thread. After that, you’re ready to play!
What races/classes are accepted in Heirot? Heirot allows the creation of new races on a case by case basis, and almost always allows new professions. However, the primary races and examples of classes can be found on our [Races] and [Classes] pages.
How does magic work in Heirot? The mechanics of magical abilities often varies from character to character, and we do not impose a set system of magic. Most magic users fall into one of these categories: 1) they learn their ability, and have a limited amount of energy they can use toward that ability in a given time (aka ‘mana’). 2) They possess their ability naturally, but using it has some long or short-term cost to their body or mind (i.e. exhaustion, lifespan shortening, physical pain, etc.) Penalties and limitations to magic should be proportional to the magnitude of the character’s magical power. As to what spells/abilities are possible, that is up to the player! Powers that are not allowed include controlling or harming other players’ characters (without permission) and time/interplanar travel.
What technology exists in Heirot? Heirot’s technology in Arken and Ighten is approximately that of medieval Europe, while Ongoreth’s corresponds to feudal Japan. Health care is fairly primitive. Weapons include bows and close range weapons. Explosives exist, but not gunpowder or guns. Electricity is nil, but there is running water and firelight. Transportation includes rickshaws, carts and animals. Communications across large spaces can be done by mounted post or by carrier birds at a high price. If your story requires technology that doesn’t exist, i.e. a flashlight or instant communication, magic-using NPC’s can be very useful.
Do I need to be a “good writer” to play on Heirot? Do you need to be a creative genius? Hardly. That’s where the collaboration comes in. This is a perfect writing style for people who like to “bounce ideas” or live in the moment. What you do need is basic grammatical fluency. Typographical errors are only natural, and this isn’t your term paper. However, if your sentences are so poorly written that they detract from the experience for other players, we may ask you to clean things up.
Who are the admins at Heirot? Heirot’s three Administrators are [Emora Deen], [Soran Nightblade], and [Kyosuke]. They can be contacted at the AIM screennames or email addresses listed in their profiles, or via the forum’s private message system.
How do I bold or italicize text in my post? For bold, insert the handles [b]text[/b]. For italics, insert [i]text[/i].
