Facts And Questions
My character was approved – now what? Once your character is approved by two admins, you’re ready to begin roleplaying! You can take one of three approaches to getting started. 1) Start a thread with a single post in the area you’d like to begin, and then post an announcement about the new thread in the “Game Creation” section. 2) Post in the Game creation section that you’ve made a new character and are looking for a thread to join (or locate other players through previous announcements by others). 3) Read a few most recent pages of currently existing threads. If you think you’d like to join a currently running story, PM one of the players in that thread and ask if your character can join.
How does thread posting work, exactly? Each player writes his own characters actions, usually in short segments (a paragraph to a page in a word processor). For an example of how this works, please read this [example].
I see a thread I want to join, but it’s already in progress. Players are often open to adding new characters to a story, but it’s not always a good time to receive new players. To find out, PM one of the players in the thread and ask permission to join. Include some info on your character.
We’re ready to start a thread, but which area should our adventure take place in? Heirot’s forum areas are dedicated to different geographic regions of Heirot. For information about each, see the [About Heirot] section. Think about the political alignment of your characters and the direction you want the story to take. If your group is from Arken, start in Arken unless your story is about an excursion to Ighten. If your group grew up in Ighten, there’s no reason they’d be in Arken unless they were very lost or on a mission of some kind. In general, use common sense and think about which area you would like to begin your story with. Players can and do change areas as their adventures progress.
I want our storyline to bring us to an unexplored kingdom/land. If you plan to stop over at a business/organization, a village or small town, an uncharted island or a little known area belonging to a strange race, you can do so without asking an admin. If you wish to add an official kingdom to Heirot or create a legitimate political power that will interact with the other nations of heirot, or if you plan to sail to a landmass not charted on Heirot’s [Map], please discuss this with an administrator first. If the kingdom or landmass is approved, we may incorporate it into the game so others can travel there as well. As a general rule, monarchs/rulers of recognized kingdoms are controlled by admins or by long-term members only.
Are there any plotlines that are not allowed in Heirot? Plots that involve changing the past, traveling in time, or jumping to other ‘worlds’ or planes are not allowed. Plots dedicated to attacking other player characters should be discussed and agreed upon with those characters first. Plots that involve the death of or intervention of a [Deity] or monarch must be discussed with an admin.
How about sex and violence? Profanity? Go for it! Our only restriction on this content is that you keep it tasteful. As a plot device and entertainment, it’s appropriate. If you’d find it in Barnes and Noble, generally you can write about it here. WHEN a thread contains sexual content, we ask that you append the word MATURE in parenthesis to the thread title to alert our younger players to the content.
What deities exist in Heirot? Can one of them aid us in our adventure? Please see the [Deities] page for a list of Heirot’s gods. If you wish for a Deity to participate in your adventure, please check with an admin first.
Our thread’s storyline involves one of Heirot’s monarchs. Who are they and can we control them? Heirot’s monarchs are considered player characters. The Shogun of Ongoreth is controlled by Kyosuke. Queen Shea of Arken is controlled by Emora Deen. Queen Sinead of Ighten is controlled by Soran Nightblade. Please let the appropriate admin know if their presence is needed in their thread.
No one’s posting in my thread! If your thread is new, make sure you’ve advertised it in the Game Creation section. If there is a dip in participation from the other players, you can contact them, wait for them, or pack up and move to a new thread with your character. Your character may not be active in more than one thread at a time.
Can I write for one of the other characters in my thread? It’s just a little thing. Without the other player’s permission, unfortunately not. If the other player has given you explicit permission, you can do so, but any actions by that character must be changed upon the controller’s request.
Someone else in my thread is occasionally writing my character’s reactions for me, and I’d rather they not. Heirot’s admins try to check up on various threads to be sure they’re running smoothly, but unfortunately we can’t follow everything. If this happens and you’re comfortable speaking with the other player, then do so. Otherwise, notify an administrator and we will take tactful, confidential action to correct the issue.
I’m leaving for a few weeks and won’t be able to post. Can I have _______ control my character while I’m gone? Yes. If you leave permanently, and no one wants to adopt your character from you, please arrange for the character to die or leave the thread rather than dumping it on someone or leaving a thread hanging for an indefinite amount of time.
My character is fighting with another member’s character. We can’t control each other’s characters, so how does this work? We recommend close out-of-character communication, i.e. via AIM, with the other players during this situation. In general you should both agree on the outcome of the battle, but do not wound another player without asking. You can say "Kyosuke swung at Soran's neck", but do not use "Kyosuke took off Soran's head with one swing." Whether his character lives or dies in response to the situation should be the controller's decision, not yours. You may never kill a player character without explicit permission from the player. Our thread started in the forest, but the characters just arrived in the city. How do we close this thread so we can begin a new one in the city? PM an admin to let them know you are leaving the thread. The thread will be locked and marked as “Lore” so that other players know it is no longer active. It then becomes part of the history of Heirot. Leave a final post in the thread stating where it moved to and the name of the new thread, so that others who want to read the story can follow it. Then, begin your new thread!
